A no spend day, but not a no cost day

I awoke to find a couple of stray calves in my yard. They were drawn down my my mamma calling out for her calf all night. I locked him up in the chicken house so I could milk her. They are not a fan of the arrangement.

I thought I might know whose they were and after googling some property records and making a call, sure enough, I located their owner. He was happy to have them back, they had been on the lam for over two months. I asked him if perhaps he had a bander big enough to band my calf and he said he thought he did and he'd bring it with when he came back with some hay for his calves. Turned out the bander was too small so he said he'd just cut him...mistake. He did a terrible job and my little guy nearly held out. I had to call the vet out for an emergency visit and 5 injections, a bag of electrolytes, sutures and 6 blood-soaked towels later he left.

I sent dh in to grab the checkbook and the vet said he prefers to send a bill, it works better for him that way. I'm guessing that's because he will be out of reach when I open the envelope and see the charges. Live and learn. That was a costly lesson, for me and the calf.

Otherwise we didn't leave home today.

Lunch was leftovers and dinner was chili from the freezer.

Hope my baby is feeling better tomorrow.
