so far so good

Well, we've been doing pretty good so far. I say pretty good...could have done better. I picked up some toilet paper - 2 bundles, and 6 cartons of ice cream for Becca's party. I had made snow ice cream, but Steve didn't seem too interested in serving it for her birthday. At least they had a buy one get one sale going on. I also picked up a 1 lb pkg of butter for .99 with coupon and a box of cereal for .99 with coupon. I ended up spending 40.13...yikes! Since when did toilet paper jump to 15.99/pkg?????? I got it on sale for 9.99 for a 24 big roll pack. They are smaller than the regular sized rolls used to be when I was a kid, oh that downsizing makes me mad! I noticed they are not as tall either, but I better not get started!!

I had a gift for Becca, but supplemented it with a $20 bill.

I promised the two (at home) kids I'd take each of them out over spring break to eat and talk...time just for them. After Steve's notice, I asked them to pick something on the cheap side. Josh picked a wing place. I thought it would be fast food, but it turned out to be a sit down place and the prices were surprisingly high!! I spent 26.55 for lunch!!! OMGosh, I about fell over. I picked one of the cheapest things on the menu too. Why is it the men in the family don't get the "going on the cheaper side" of things. Em picked Chipotle and we shared a meal and drink. I used the rebate card and so no out of pocket for her lunch.

Steve bought gas, spent 27.54. Josh paid up $100 of what he owed us, so that was good.

Other than that, nothing spent. Like I said not too bad, but could have been better. I got another staples rebate check, $9, so will go buy more Easter candy for the kids.

I just scheduled the mortgage payment and the CC payment today...together almost $5300!!! We pay the CC off every month, but had a bunch of stuff from before the layoff notice. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now, except pay up.

Steve has his resume out to two companies already and also up on Monster. We've got our our faith out there that he will get an interview with one or both. He told the Lord he'd like a two week vacation, then on to the new job.

Here we go....again.

Well, Steve got a layoff notice last Monday (3/23). The company merger saw his project cut entirely. Everyone's last day was last Friday the 27th, as project manager...and due to the favor of God, he was given a last day of 4/30. The new company is taking things a different direction. So we have put things in cash preservation mode. We've got maybe 4 months in savings, six if we really stretch it. And only 4 weeks severance pay. So, I once again chronicle our progress and day to day stresses and victories.

Steve usually buys a pop from the machine at work, only 25 cents a day, but he couldn't bring himself to spend even a quarter all week. I was surprised and really happy that he is putting full effort into things. We ate leftovers from the fridge all week and I plan to only buy groceries as absolutely necessary. I mixed powdered milk half and half with the rest of the gallon in the fridge and no one noticed...good move. Also, I've cut back to eating only what I need to feel satisfied....and then I'll grab up the leftovers from the meal afterwards. I want the kids and Steve to be full, as they tend to be bigger eaters.

I bought two packages of cream cheese for Becca's birthday cheesecake. They were on sale and I paid a total of 3.08. I also put 4.37 of gas into Josh's vehicle since I borrowed it to run to town. I had cake mixes here, but she can't eat gluten products, so I did a cheesecake instead. I have a gift I had purchased a month or two back on Clearance...a sushi maker kit, she loves sushi. I'll throw a bag or two of rice and maybe anything else I can find that I have on hand here.

Saturday we took Em into town to bowl with her friends....spring break, oh joy. We waited in town to save on the gas and took a walk along the river. I had a coupon for a free burger at Arby's with purchase of a drink. Steve wanted fries as well, so we ended up spending 4.03, however I put it on the rebate card I had from the phone, so no out of pocket. Also we filled up the gas tank on that, 21.88, but still no out of pocket.

Sunday night when I picked up the kids from youth, they had some dinner left over. Mac & cheese and chicken nuggets that they were tossing, so I snatched it up and made a tuna casserole by adding a can of soup and of tuna. Today I have a pot of chili started, we'll have that tonight, the casserole tomorrow and chili again Wednesday when Becca comes to celebrate her birthday with us.

Even though Em is almost 14 she doesn't get that things have changed. She wants to go in to town every day during spring break. I told her she could pick one, maybe two, but no more gas money to spend. She griped about it and said we have plenty of money to spend, lots of people are out of work and are doing fine and we will too. She has never experienced lack.

I got a partial shipment of the soap I bartered for my cream separator. I traded it for 500 bars of soap. She retails them for 2.50-3.00/bar, so hopefully I can make some money off the whole thing.

I sold 5 dozen eggs today and two processed birds, so made $36. Also got a $3 rebate check in the mail and Em paid me the $20 she owed me.

Playing catch Up

I haven’t fallen off the wagon, just had a few things going on that have kept me busy. I put in a lot of hours the past two weeks, have been working on taxes, also had a flaming toothache that put me in tears off and on for many days. Of course since the move we haven’t found a dentist although its time for our 6-month check-ups so it’s a pressing issue a this point. Anyhow went in and after x-rays and an extensive exam, all is well, just packing food around/under my crown. That thing has been a thorn since the day it was put in. I felt it was the wrong size to start with and it’s such a food trap. I have enough saved up to redo it, just haven’t found a good dentist yet.

Ah well, I digress. So as far as spending, some news is good some not so good.

I think I only had three spending days since the 14th, however they weren’t completely conservative.

The day I went into town to see the dentist, my oldest daughter called to say the grocery had yogurt cups on sale for 50 cents each and then had a 25 cent coupon on each, so I went and cleaned them out. Same with pints of milk, they ended up costing .25 each (equivalent to $2/gal) after sale and coupon so I nabbed a bunch of them as well. I should have gone home then, but decided to go across the street to the other main grocery and found a bunch of nice looking clearance meats and other items like butter for 1.77/lb, so I stocked up there too. Also picked up more fresh fruits. For both groceries OOP = 105.62!!!

I was in such pain; I just wanted to treat myself so I stopped at Walgreens and bought a giant Starbucks bottled frappe. Not frugal, but still cheaper than going to the actual store and buying my usual. OOP = 2.16

Also, due to the pain, I hadn’t eaten for 2 days before that so stopped at Taco Bell and got something soft to eat on the other side. I know...lame excuse. I should have put those canned soups I bought in the car, that would have been a nice save. oh well. OOP = 1.79

Sunday, Steve wanted to run into Kohl’s and pick up a belt, new slacks and some new black socks. At least the pants were on clearance and we had a 15% off coupon. OOP = 48.20. Well, so much for catching up on the clothing budget this month….maybe next month.

He also wanted a new book for when he travels and he had a coupon for 30% off, so used up his GC at Borders. OOP = 6.11

I had a few coupons to use at Target OOP = 24.54 (orig. 78.22) 68.63% savings.

Lastly Steve wanted pizza, so stopped at the grocery after work one late night. OOP = 6.45

I totally sunk our grocery budget this month. I have some ground to make up next month.

On the plus side, both kids paid me some of what they owed me, I got paid for a job I did and got paid for taking 3 surveys, for a total of 937.50

A no spend week....pretty much

Well, I think we went almost the whole week without spending. Steve bought gas on the way home and also a card and box of candy for me for Valentines Day, all purchased today. I don’t know what he spent and won’t ask, but I doubt it was much. Gas was 41.00.

I was able to put a chunk down on the mortgage this week, I know payoff is a loooong way off, but I just hate having any debt hanging over my head. I’ll be glad the day that is paid in full. In 8 months we have already managed to pay 2 years 10 months worth of payments. Woo hoo!

Valentines dinner was simple but nice. We usually have spaghetti; sort of a tradition from when we were young and broke. It was red, so made it to the table as Valentine’s fare along with red Jello, red Kool-aid and a few other things that were affordable back then. This year everything we had was from stuff I had in the house. We had a nice salad, homemade rolls, spaghetti with meatballs and for dessert, fondue. Serving the meal on china helped dress up an otherwise plain meal too. Chocolate dipped Rice Crispy type treats in the shape of a heart and put on a skewer worked as a centerpiece. I made one for each of us and put them in a decorated pot (tea canister wrapped with a cloth napkin and tied with a small bow, stuffed with newspapers to hold the skewers and topped with decorative moss). They turned out nice, look sort of boquet-ish. I also decorated the table with a red table cloth, tulle, sprinkles, flat glass marbles and candles. The kids loved it and we had an enjoyable time….although rather unromantic for Steve & me. We talked about going out, but decided to save the money and eat together as a family.

I’m pretty psyched about putting a chunk on the mortgage. I set a certain amount as a goal to put on by March and we have exceeded that. I’m hoping we have an income tax refund to add to it too, but if not, the check from the economic stimulus package will go to it in its entirety. I guess that kinda makes me a nerd huh? You know you’re a frugal junkie when…

A Planned Spending Day

Today was a planned shopping day. Well, most of it was planned. I see we have already spent more this month on incidental items than we did all last month. Not happy about that, feeling a little bit of failure here. I had a little different vision of how this was supposed to go, but I will look on the bright side, we have curtailed our spending a lot by setting and attempting to stick to some lofty goals. I think I have enough groceries with some frozen fruit and canned veggies to last us the rest of the month, so I will attempt to avoid going to town till March.

1. Target.
I had coupons, clearance or free after rebate for all items. Cost before sales & coupons was 46.74, so after (including rebates) I saved 87.27% there.
1 bottle Rx Essentials 10.99 FAR (had a coupon, so I actually will make $5 on that)
12 oz Contact solution, 6.89 FAR
12 oz Renu 4.79 (2.50 coupon),
4 lb bananas .67
1 bag chips (free w/coupon)
Spam singles (free w/coupon)
4 pack Promise Active yogurt (free w/coupon)
2 19 oz boxes cereal 3.33
1 large box Jello pudding .22
Pkg chocolate bark (for valentines baking) .98
Tax 3.01
OOP = 28.83

2. Home Depot.
Just a reminder that Steve isn’t really gung-ho on this no-extra-spending venture. The laptop quit charging a few nights ago, so he “needed” a voltmeter thingy to figure out why it quit charging. He actually has one already, but “can’t find it,” so he bought a new one, sigh! OOP = 39.90

3. MacWizard.
By the way, turns out the charger is bad….hmmm, did we need a $40 toy to tell us that? He ordered a new charger online. I will give him credit, he didn’t go with an Apple original, but found a cheaper brand with a better reputation. Guess I could say he is on board in his own way. With shipping OOP = 45.56

4. Grocery.
Saved 64.45% on groceries. Got 179.56 worth, OOP = 63.83 I could have saved another $5 with the coupon from the entertainment book, but I misplaced the book, so will put that on my short list of things to do tomorrow. I have till April 30 to use it, that won’t be hard.

I bought fruit & veggies, including 10 lb. oranges, grapes, green and red leaf lettuce, and 2 lb baby carrots, along with 2 lb cheese, 4 gallon of milk and a lot of staple items. I did buy some unnecessary items, including 12 2-liters of pop 8 for Steve 4 for the kids, 3 candy bars (.22 each) for the kids for Valentines Day and 2 pizzas. I had coupons for the candy bars and pizzas and combined them with sales. The pop was B1G1, so they came out to .94 each. 2 weeks ago the pop was 1.49 regular price, love it how they jack up the price to put it on sale….do they think people don’t notice???

5. Gas Station.
Since we spent over $50 at the grocery, we got .10/gal discount on gas. We were just under ¼ tank, so we filled up. OOP = 37.61

6. Feed Store.
I was running low on feed for the hens and the dog, so I picked up 2 bags chicken feed (one layer crumbles and one scratch grains) and dog food was on sale ($2 off) so I picked up 2 bags of that as well. I see they raised the price again on the chicken feed, about $1 over last month’s price. Also, dog food has gone up from 8.99 last August for a 40 lb bag to 12.99 on sale the last 2 times I’ve bought it. Rats! OOP = 50.76

A Big-Spend Day

Steve’s company changed hands today and he got his retaining bonus already. We didn’t expect it for a couple of weeks after the sale closed. Anyhow it was a real check so he had to go to the bank and deposit it. Seems, seeing that actual check, he just couldn’t resist blowing a bit of it. He stopped off at the Apple store and bought the kids each a tech gift. He called and asked to buy me one too, I told him I’d rather put my portion on the mortgage, so after the tithe, the remainder of the check is going toward the mortgage. By the way I haven’t seen the receipt yet, he says it’s to the tune of 600.00…gulp. Guess we are doing our part to stimulate the economy.

I spent time today and last night tweaking the budget. I think I have things ironed out for the most part. I was shocked to see they more than doubled the federal taxes withheld on todays paycheck, hope that was a one time thing, guess I’ll know by the end of the month. I got 2 five dollar survey checks in the mail today, took a 3.75 survey, and accumulated enough points on another site to request a ten dollar check. I’ll only add the ones that I have actually received so far into my totals. Also got a check in the mail for $7 from my SIL for a favor I did, didn’t expect to be reimbursed for it, so that was nice, guess she really appreciated the effort, she sent me a box of chocolates last week along with a thank you note.

I also bought 2 gift cards for Steve’s niece & nephew’s upcoming birthdays. I bought discounted cards and used my cc that gives me 1% back, so I saved a total of 8% on that. Their birthdays aren’t till April & June, but when I find a discounted card at a store they like, I jump at it. OOP = 42.27

Yesterday was a no-spend day, but tomorrow I plan to go to town and pick up a few groceries. So we'll still be at 4 for the month. Not as good as I'd hoped for.

10 things I did today to lose the weight:

Unpacked a box from the bedroom closet
Recycled leftovers for dinner
Took 2 surveys
Exercised for 30 min
Worked for 4.5 hours
Called regarding a $3 overcharge, got a check coming for it.
Tweaked the budget
Cleaned the kitchen
Swept the hardwood floors
Kept the heat off all day, it still hasn’t come on, woo hoo!
Combined several opened condiment bottles from the fridge.

Laundry Plunger Thingy

We were up to 3 no-spend days, could have hit 4 today, but I found a vintage laundry agitator I had been searching for so I can begin doing my laundry by hand. Now to find a vintage wringer to run them through. OOP = 12.24

I sent valentines candy off to 6 neices and nephews on Steve's side, too many on my side to do that. Also, sent some off to his Mom & Dad. I bought red and silver wrapped Christmas candy on clearance after the season and put it in lunch baggies with toppers that I made at a recent scrappbooking get together, so spending on those was for postage only. OOP = 5.94

Steve received his letter of commitment from the new company, so finally I can breathe knowing his job is secure as they transition things. It does mess up my budgeting as they will go from 26 pay periods/yr to 24, and from paying in arrears to paying to date. But in light of what could have been, I'll be happy to deal with it. It will give me opportunity to rework the budget to reflect the changes. In honesty, I'm a bit confused about what the paychecks will be like till they have transitioned things. The budget will be have to be re-worked from March on.

Now that Josh is working, gas for the truck will be his responsibility as will half of the insurance. Because he will be taking the only other vehicle and going straight from school to work, I have no way of getting the youngest daughter home from the bus stop besides walking 6 miles down and back up the mountain in cold, unpredictable weather, so I told Josh I will pay him lost wages for taking her home since he will be missing out on 30 minutes of work each day. Also, I will pay him for the extra gas to run her home. However, he has run up quite a tab with me, so it will just come off that till he is paid up.

Josh has a friend who's parents kicked him out of the house, so he has temporarily moved in with us. He's really a great kid, I hope they work things out soon for his sake. However, I really don't mind the extra mouth to feed....I'd keep him indefinately.

Also, my nephew got married recently. I have to work on this being late thing, today I stuck $50 in the mail for him and his new wife.
